Sustainable Hamilton County Workshop Series

Session I – Fiscal Sustainability and Quality of Life

Subsidized Relocation of Businesses and the Effect in Our Communities: Policy Options

When a company leaves one location for another nearby, the general attitude has been “at least they are staying in the region.” However, the expenses in infrastructure improvements and other concessions that local communities incur to attract the company in the first place, compounded by the effect that the abandonment and blight of that vacant facility has on its surroundings, becomes a burden to the affected community and cumulatively to the entire County. We can’t blame companies for using the tools they have to their disposal. But, there should be a more rational way that local communities could use to promote economic development without cannibalizing their neighbors. This session could be a good starting point to initiate a conversation on how to devise a win-win solution.
